smell coming from engine

Hi i have a 318is with a 325i lump when i travel afew miles down the road the engine smells of burning plastic ,ive checked all the wiring and seems fine , the engine seems to be really hot ,theres water in the radiatior and is not leaking away ,it seems the more miles i do the hotter it gets but the heat gauge doesnt go of from the middle any ideas im worried the car will catch on fire . any help would be gratfully apprieciated ty

Have you checked the security of the earth strap from the sump to the body ?

It can work loose overheating the cable.
