ticking noise

hi ive got a very annoying ticking noise coming from my 316i i thought it was the tappets but read in the haynes book that they are self adjusting but i no it is defintly comin from that part of the engine i took the rocker cover off and it all looks clean could the pipe that squirts oil to the tappets be blocked causing one of them to stick or not

Certainly could... easy & cheap to replace anyway. Just a question of what damage has been done by it. M40s are notorious for noisy top ends, & you'll be lucky if you've got one that'll shut up without a top end rebuild...

i will have to hope im lucky then it int been doin it to long a week or two at the most but it does get a little quiter as the engine gets warmer

Keeping my fingers crossed for you mate. Any damage will be determined by the number of miles you have done with it ticking, not how long.

Change the oil spray bar and try a slightly thicker grade oil.

As everyone on here that's had an M40 engine will tell you, FREQUENT oil changes are the best care you can give it.

Thanks mate i will have mine crossed as well i will find out on saturday wot the damage is. i only changed the oil about 4 months ago i tend to do it every 6 months. as for the miles i dont really do a lot of miles it has proberly done about 60 or 70 miles since i noticed the noise about 2 weeks ago

Try resetting valve clearances first. Look in Tech section on here for detailed info.
