I keep getting a wet boot - it fills up in the 'pockets' on either side.. now on the nearside i figured it was the aerial so i tightened it up a bit.. now the offside im confused bout.. Its not from the rear light! Any ideas? Appears to be coming from toward the front somewhere..

are you sure its not from the light cluster? it's a comon problem.
try the rubber seal above the light clusters too. in the corner there's a gap.

thanks for that. I have the same problem only on the left and since I had my new tinted lenses put in. I used the old rubber seals from my original set. Maybe it's time for a set of new 'uns.
Cheers

Off Topic...Sorry
Yeah... Imagine the scene. The car has been siting outside for 2 YEARS.
you (I) open the boot to find 2 mould covered waxy jackets, a oxy/acetaline torch, and BOTH sides are FILLED with stale water.
mixed with wheat or barley or something, that makes you

The car was FREE though so what do I expect right! (The 316)

no evidence of water coming in from there.. might have to shut myself in the boot with a torch whilst someone sprays the car with water..smithy318i wrote:are you sure its not from the light cluster? it's a comon problem.

i had this on the 2 dr. too
we worked on loads of different solutions but never took it far enough so i still had a buckets worth (exag) in there when she was sold
but the drainholes behind the rear quarter window trims, or the drain ovals behind the bumper, or the boot seal, the light seals
if u strip out the trim, and then get in the boot with a torch it may show itself, but will also offer the family some mild entertainment

ive seen this too - seems to be on the offside more for me. At first i notice that the bottles of oil/screen wash/coolant/stella were coated in condensation so thought it was just dripping of them. But even with them gone its still coming in - below the carpet.
I suspect its either getting in through the holes for the rear bumper or else somewhere near the wheelarch??
Other thing was that if the car was just parked in the rain and not driven the water didnt seem to get in as quick.

The boot is colder than the rest of the interior and it can be just the moisture in the air that condenses and pools in the boot.
Check the rest of the car for leaks and damp carpets
leave the air vents open and check the breather holes under the rear bumper and maybe prop them open and see if it helps.

is it possible for there to be rot inside the wheel arch that waters getting sprayed into, or is it double skinned? ive got the same prob but only had a quick look at the tailights and spoiler fitting for leaks, both of which seemed fine
as soon as i got my car i got some of thay waxoil and lifted the carpet in the back and painted all of that tray bit and the back of the arch both sides.then i lifted the carpet at the front and put some over the jacking points and up the corners!! gotta try to keep it at bay a bit!!
What this water problem could be is the drain pipe that dumps the water out side of the car, the pipe can be found on the inner rear right wing and as a result can overspill into either wells, also a common problem is the rubber around the boot. best suggestion i can give is hold out till a bit more sunshie and do the old water test whilst you are in the boot and trace the drip before the dreaded rust kicks in
hope that helps

right, just spent the day pulling out my boot carpet (which is a real pain on a cabby) armed myself with a hose and started pouring water over the back end.
the conclusion?
well its a bit of a strange one really but it was always the left/passenger side pocket that was full of water but the leak (which was pretty bad) was actually coming through the light cluster on the other side.
now wheres that mastic gun........
try it with the hose method and report back some results

Take the rear bumper off, remove the vents and refit them with some sealant.
