So i had a feeling that the profile gasket was gone in my m42 for a number of reasons(running very hot, coolant spitting out of the exhaust, choclate brown coloured coolant in expansion tank etc)

So i pull the head of to get a look, and from what i can see the profile gasket looks alrite (and may have been replaced before) so now i am wondering what my problem is. This is the first time ive ever taken the head off so to be honest i dont really know what it should all look like when in good health, so ill describe a few things that bother me:

-First off, the oil inside the engine is a very brown colour and doesnt smell right, sort of smells burnt

- Ive seen pictures of the insides of m42 engines where everything is a nice gold colour, in mine all the internal are very brown

-My throttle body was very dirty with lot of mucky gunk in it, the same applies for the intake manifold.

- On the back of the head thr is a wee pipe that runs from the throttle body into the head, when i pulled this off the metal pipe is badly eroded and has a hole in it.

Here are a few pictures that might mean a bit more to the experts amongst you. Hope someone can help me here. Thanks

hi

too much oil causes lots of problems and can burst seals all over the place so it might be that.

hi

it defo looks like it hasent had regular oil changes and too me it looks like there has been too much oil and its been forced up through alot of the other engine parts aswell.

i had a escort years ago that had too much oil in it and the pressure blew the oil cap clean off the car and basically fooked the engine

hi

i would do it just for the fact that these engines are old and need attention to get the benefit out of them.but yours definetly looks like the previous owner has not serviced it well so a good service will definetly go a long way to helping you.

like you say fingers crossed that theres no permanent damage.check every gasket and seal that you can and replace them.
