Take each belt off and run the car for half a minute to narrow down the source of the noise.
Doubt if it's the water pump. They don't normally whine.

hope you get it sorted...i have a mid-high pitched whine coming from the front of my engine, mine sounds like its coming from the camshaft flywheel, maybe a bearing. be interested to hear what you find wise.

ive taken off the belts and no noise. put the alternator belt back on, noise coming from water pump... just got to get a water pump and see if its gone.

have you recently fitted a cam belt and idler ....if the idler has been tensioned up to tight the belt can whine a bit or maybe its time to do a cam belt before it goes on you

Noise goes when the alternator/pump belt is removed, so it's not the cambelt.
However, I'd recommend changing the cambelt when the water pump is replaced, as the tensioning spring locates against the water pump.
