Yes
The output flange attached to the output shaft on the iS gearbox is longer hence your prop being too long.

Just read this........

It depends on what year your iS is. Some use a stock M40 type gearbox, others use an E34 518i 'box which is a tad longer. Perhaps the cheapest route is to bolt your M40 gearbox back on (an easy swap) and use the existing prop.
Don't forget that the old M10 316 prop was a skinny thing and different to the M40 type. Is yours a 316 or a 316i??

You've got a twin mass flywheel then, late E30's used the E36 type. You can either buy a 318is prop or use the M40 flywheel, clutch, box and prop. Early iS cars used an M40 flywheel anyway so it'll work.
The M40 bellhousing won't quite clear the twin mass flywheel.

my 318is engine has the cluch attatched, so will the 316i gearbox fit onto that clutch? i dont really want to use a clutch thats done 160,000 miles, so would prefer to use the 318is' one.

Also check the diameters of the input shaft. Later ones have a different diameter and won't fit.

Or just do the obvious and get a 318iS propshaft...................

dual mass flywheels aren't good news either!
