i had a similar problem
have a look at you air intake system, if the pipe after the air box, but before the throttle body is perished, with holes all over the place...... fairly common fault, the engine suck more air through, by-passing the air flow sensor, ECU freaks out, coz gets a different air fuel mix to what it expects.
If this has happened, a tempory fix - ducktape the bu**er, or get a new one from BMW £15
It could also be that the auto idle valve is sticking, this is conneted to the above ^ pipe, and also goes into the throttle body, gentle persuasion with a hammer, or taking out and cleaning can some times work.

i've moved this to tech help seeing as its a technical query
and i would say that you had an air leak on the induction side of the engine
check all the rubber hoses from the air box to the throttle body as has been said above, failing that it could be the intake manifold gasket, most li.ey to be this if it dissapears when hot as the manifold may expand and help close up the gap
