I have just bought 2 tyres for my cab's 17" BK alpina copies, 205/40/17 but even with so called rim protection the rims stick out? The man at the garage says go to 215's,

What should I do?

width of your wheels would help us....
BTW 205/45/17 is the 'correct' rolling diameter, or 215/40/17.

I have 205 tyres on 7.5 inch rims, and I haven't hit anything yet.

On a 7.5" rim, you would probably be better off with a 215/40 instead of the 205/40. The 215/40 is also the correct diameter.
