I recently upgraded my discs to cross drilled items, and fitted Mintex fast road pads.

If I brake heavily, one wheel locks up, then the other, resulting in me having to fight the steering wheel to keep the car moving in a straight line.

I notice when rolling to a stop on the brakes, the steering wheel is often trying to turn to the left quite sharply...

I believe this indicates that the calipers are the problem.

Should I buy 2 new calipers, or try and fix what I have?

Cheers,

if it is the calpiers to blame recon can be bought from ECP for under £50 each or if you are capable with the spanners a reconditioning kit can be bought from bmw for about £35 per pair of calpiers.maybe the existing calipers just need some grease on the sliding parts?

Don't think it's worth reconditioning them for the sake of £15 a side, would cost me more than that in time! I'll buy them reconned I reckon.

Is it fairly easy to bleed the brakes on E30's?

Worth upgrading to braided hoses at the same time?

Were the pads evenly worn when you removed the old ones?
Are the rubber dust covers on the caliper pistons in good order/
Did you clean and lubricate the sliding pins?
Have you cooked and glazed your new pads?

old pads looked OK i think.
Not inspected the dust covers on the pistons...

I didn't clean and lubricate the sliding pins, not sure what you mean by this?

No, I followed the bed-in procedure with the new pads.

Cheers

grease the 2 shiny metal rods that allow the caliper to slide back and forth

The caliper carriers are fitted with chromed dowels that have a 7mm hex drive in the top of them. These dowels get sticky and covered in muck so they need to be cleaned to allow the caliper to travel back and forth on them.

If the caliper doesn't move freely on the carriers, as above, then that can cause all sorts of problems.

There is a lot of voodoo about calipers but they are very straightforward and can be serviced and corrected quite simply with a bit of patience. BMW still supply the pistons and seal kits. Apart from that there is nothing else to it. Get them stripped down and post up some pics.
