is it a simple swap over job, unplug fuel pips and quickly connect new filter without spilling too much fuel, or will it need bleeding or anything after its changed?
Any advice on doing it?

You will need to depressurise the fuel system 1st.
Start the engine and pull fuse 11 to cut power to the pump. The engine will stall and the fuel system will be depressurised.
There will still be a fair bit of spillage.
If you don't depressurise the fuel system like this, you will be faced with petrol at 45 PSI pressure when you remove the feed hose.
No bleeding is required when fitting the new one. Just replace it and crank the engine until the car starts (after replacing the fuse)

just swapped my fuel filter (316i M40), don't know if it's the same as 325, but mine was in the engine bay (as opposed to near the fuel tank).
you need to de-pressurise the system as smithy says, but i think you need to undo the petrol filler cap also, and disconnect the battery earth lead after you've removed the fuse and ran the juice out of the car. put some rags underneath the filter to catch the fuel. i disconnected the bottom hose first and used the plastic stopper that was on each end of the new filter to quickly cap the bottom of the old filter, there was a fair bit of fuel still inside it. then removed the top hose and quickly put the new filter on to try and stop as much fuel as possible. took the little plaggy stopper out the bottom end of the new fuel filter and connected it quick. all the hoses had jubilee clips, and the filter itself is attached to the body with a jubilee clip, so it just slid out.
