Sounds like your viscous fan coupling is knackered.
A new one is about £40 from www.gsfcarparts.com

Templ8e30 - Spot on with the price £39.95 Including VAT picked one up today!
Also a colleague had a fault with their fan on a seven series, which i believe to be the same or similiar and the fan actually came off the shaft it sits on from the water pump, causing damage to bonnet and lining, destroying the Rad and I think damgaging an electrical connection. Pretty messy by all accounts.
Not trying to scare you or anything but it could happen.
If its loose, get it changed asap.

What engine is it? If its an m40/m42/m10 it could be the water pump as the viscous sits directly on it. I can't see how a viscous would wobble around?
When you have the viscous off wobble the thread it was attached to, if it does wobble replace the water pump.
Water pumps are easy and relative cheap to change. If one hasn't bee done on the car in the last 4 years that you can see its probably worth it.

Viscous coupling contains a bearing, and bearings can, and do, fail!Gwynleym10 wrote:What engine is it? If its an m40/m42/m10 it could be the water pump as the viscous sits directly on it. I can't see how a viscous would wobble around?
The one on my M40 daily driver has a little play on it, and has had, ever since I bought the car about five years ago.
Viscous coupling sits on the end of the water pump on the M20 as well, and, AFAIK, does on every other BMW engine.

I dunno why I'm writing about viscous fan tonight I don't even have one... Not that Brian would agree with that!
Still would look at the water pump as well though.
