Morning...just wondering what people's thoughts are on 318i E30s. I'm going to look at one tomorrow, which according to the advert looks very well looked after, clean and unmolested, if a little pricey at £750.

I've had a 316i for 6 months, which has basically been a nightmare...is there a great deal of difference between the 2? Do they both have the same M40 engine?

Basically, I'm just hoping for a few pointers to look out for, I know all the rust and rot spots to check...but not so much with the engine etc.

I expect everyone to tell me to get a 325i, but I can't really afford the higher insurance etc, and increased chance of it getting nicked!

And I need a car quickly!

You wont find very much difference in power between your 1.6 and the 1.8
The engine has the same top section, but the bottom has a bigger cylinder capacity.

Check for noisy tappets.
Check that the Idle speed is smooth.
Also check to see if the car shakes when the rpm is 1500 and your driving 20mph with your foot barely pressing the pedal.
Also, if it has a K&N cone filter on the AFM, ask the seller if he has the original airbox.

If it has a K&N cone filter, then walk away.

Cheers Smithy, what does the shaking at 1500rpm mean? Major problems?
Also, re: the K&N air filter, I'd avoid anything with one of these, but it's an oldish bloke selling it and he says it's totally standard, so hopefully hasn't been tampered with at all.
