might be getting a free diff off a 320i will it fit and make much of a differance to the 318i touring it would be going on to?

Don't have the actual ratios to hand, but wouldn't think there's going to be much difference between them.

320 is a 4.27 i think? 318 is 3.9-4.1???

Removed the shagged diif off my 320 ( post facelift) about a year ago. It was 4.10. went 3.64 which was a bit tall. Now running a 3.91 which is fine. I don't you'll have any dramas

Some 320 tourings have a 4.27.

Generally speaking, tourings and automatics will have one ratio higher than saloons, and auto tourings two ratios higher. Also some E30 models have had a change by one ratio along their production run at some time.

I think mine is a 4.27, and I was told that 320i and 316i autos should most likely have the same diff as mine.

Strangely enough, none whatsoever if it's the same ratio!
If the new one is higher numerically you will gain acceleration at the expense of MPG, and vice verse, assuming the two diffs aren't too dissimilar.
