Its very loose around the dead ahead and if you grab the column in the engine bay and twist it, theres a delay, like a busted UJ, how easy is it to change the offending article, it passed the MOT like this but surely its a safety issue...thanks guys.
Mmm, agreed - it shouldn't of passed an MOT with this problem.
Easy fix though, loosen the 2X 13mm nuts + bolts on the top and bottom of the UJ, undo the bolts holding the rack onto the sub frame. Drop the rack down leaving the track rod ends still connected to the front struts - this is where you might have to wiggle the UJ abit to release it from the steering column.
Once the UJ is removed, you can buy a fix kit from Euro Car Parts which consists of a new rubber ring and nuts + bolts.
On the original rubber ring in the UJ you'll notice that there's not nuts + bolts but machined metal - grind or drill these out and replace with the new rubber, nuts + bolts
And replace everything that you loosened - last thing to do is tighten the top + bottom UJ bolts.
Hope this has helped you, Neil.
