for the last six months ive been doin my engine conversion, took out 2ltr and replaced with a 2.5 running on the old 2.0ltr box, also put a 3:64 lsd on there and rear disc conversion. finally got it all finished today and i was chuffed to bits. drove it round my local area everything seemed fine, then discovered a slight whurring noise? thought nothing of it, doing 60mph plus the back end locked up and i slid down the road, couldnt move it when i had stopped so had to get a mate with a recovery van to tow me home!
the car will only start when the clutch is in, does anyone have any ideas as im well and truly fcuked off lol.

Did the van tow you with the rear wheels on the ground?

Sounds like the diff's collapsed or summit and its caused
gearbox damage also making it stick in gear.

Sounds like something has locked inside your box maybe?
Pretty sure the reason you cant start the car clutch out is even in neutral there are some gearbox internals spinning, connected via the clutch plate.

Nightmare. I feel for you mate, If it's enough to lock up solid like that then it's terminal. I have got a mate who had this happen on an E30 and it twisted the prop to. Sorry dude. et us know the outcomeSounds like the diff's collapsed or summit and its caused gearbox damage also making it stick in gear
Disconnect the prop from the diff first and then see if the wheels rotate. At least you'll know if the diff is ok and then you can start to logically figure out what's going on. First rule of fault finding in my book is to figure out what isn't wrong and rule it out.
I would suspect something like the input drive on the gearbox, or gearbox internals. Clutch is obviously disengaging for you to be able to start it like you said.
Good luck mate.

Aye, at least you'll know whats fecked then, my moneys on the box.........not nice dude, sounds like you've done some work on it toounbolt the prop from the diff and see what happens?
Look on the bright side. It's likely the gearbox, you've obviously just done tons of work to it so at least you know what's involved in changing the box. You can pick one up for Ԛ£40. Not much help but there is always light at the end of the tunnel

Pretty sure that would be the gearbox, how many miles on it and did it chatter in neutral before the swap ?
There is NO nucleus.

Cars can be fun sometimes! I'll go along with the failed gearbox theory.
You had a 2 litre car with a failing gearbox, and now, feeding 2.5 litre power and torque through it has finished it off.
Take three of the bolts out of the front of the prop to confirm its gearbox and not diff.

Yep.
I had a similar experience in a Capri 2.8i.
90mph, outside lane of motorway, back wheels trying to lock. Nice!
Turned out water had got in the gearbox through a rotten gasket and it seized.
Had some interesting looking gears in there!

I think your diff is now probably only suitable for use as a large paperweight.
