Cold start problem
Moderator: martauto
My 1983 316 1756cc (Carb) 4-speed won't start unless it's realy hot outside... It has to be as warm as a warm engine. If I pour petrol straight in the carburettor the car starts easy. Even if it's -30C outside and no engine warmer. It's a real pain to have to open the hood and pour fuel in every time the car is cold. It takes 2 - 3 hours before the car is so cold it won't start though. Anyone know something that might help me?

What carb is on it? sounds like it's knackered.
Get a compression test done too, if the rings / bores are on the way out this too could cause you probs, does it smoke much when driving? use any oil etc?

It's the 2B4 carburettor.
Yeah.. your right the car smokes a LOT... I was wondering about that... But the that did not count when I had the car on environmental-control (part of European-Union rules). It wen't trough the control with no faults.
It's syntetic-oil... I just bought the car.. and that was what the previous owner used... and it was low on oil so I used the rest of te can he had used.
Can car the engine be damaged with these comperssion problems... I don't think I can afford a control or repairing before mid-summer.
Thanks for your help.
