just fitting rear discs, put new handbrake cable on there and tightened it from the front and it seems about 2inches too long? the whels dont lock when handbrake is fully on? really stuck!

Did you buy the rear disc handbrake cables? Handbrake cables are different for drums and discs. I did the rear disc conversion on my 320i, and the handbrake cables are fine. IIRC the old drum cables were longer than the new disc cables. Don't expect miracles with handbrake on rear discs - my pet mechanic at the local BMW garage told me they are never brilliant, even when set up properly.
