hi i think i need help i just bought a 316i lux and i have plans for it but there is a few problems with it at the moment my car revs out at 5000 revs in all the gears and tops out at 105 mph i looked at the rota arm but it looks good could anyone help me. i was told that in the late models of the 316i they had to put 1.8 engines in them is that true aswell. thanks.

Yes they put 1.8 M40's in them. And, erm, its a 316i, it wont pull much at over 5k and wont do much over 105 i shouldnt think. My 318i max's at about 115 and stops pulling at about 6k.

I've had my 316i just short of 115 mph in the past. It could be the cam on its way out if your car also suffers from some of these symptoms mentioned in this link :-http://www.bmwe30.net/cgi-bin/datacgi/d ... Section=08

Hmm, they barely do that new! Was it down hill or is your speedo over reading?! 105mph is fine for a healthy e30 316i.magnumlove wrote:I've had my 316i just short of 115 mph in the past. Could be the rev-limiter built into the rotor arm in the distributor (on the older 320i, it's just a spring-loaded switch in the rotor arm, which operates under centrifugal action to short out the sparks at around 6,000 rpm: if the spring's worn, it'll cut the revs at a lower rpm. I naughtily removed the rev-limiter switch on mine to allow exploration into the red-line range
