dont know about the fuel gauge but as to the wipers i had the same problem and found a fuse had stuck underneath the relay and was shorting it out,,,so its likely to be a relay problem...thre oblong black one in the fuse box

Expand on 2. Are you saying that all the time you are driving you have either the washers or the wipers running??
Fot the temp and fuel gauge - stick your old clocks back in and see what that does.

firstly the clocks that i bought the car with were for a 316! and my car being a 325i the tacho was reading wrong! in saying that the fuel gauge did work and so did the temp gauge which are not working now with the new clocks
would it make a difference if my clocks were from a german left hand drive cabrio ??
the problem with the wipers has been there always even with the old clocks in or the new ones ... i might check the relays !!
and yes the wipers come on when the feel like it just at random as do the the washers jets !! again im hoping this is relay related

2 the clocks are driving me mad

1/ Which subframe - front or rear, and what's wrong with it? Only thing I know of that gets damaged on the actual subframe is the anti roll bar mounts can get damaged on the front frame.
2/ Seems like your new clocks are faulty. 316 and 325 clocks are identical. They are matched to a car by the little white coding plug which fits into the lower front of the clocks. Fit the 325 one to the 316 clocks.
3/ Faulty switch is most likely, but by no means definite. Disconnect it and see if it makes a difference.
4/ You can live with it, but will the engine live?
5/ DVLA at Swansea should be able to work from the reg. number. New V5 will cost you £38, IIRC.
