I've just put an M40 engine into my pre-face lift e30 where there was an M10 engine. Now there are no clocks working speedo, rpm and temp gauge. The only thing that is working are the service lights and fuel gauge. are the clocks totally f**ked or is ther ea common fault

Coding plug won't stop things working. Wrong one just gives wrong readings, but I would think M10 one is close enough for a M40 anyhow.
Check the engine connector plug (C101 connector) is clean and done up properly, and check fuses 10, 12 and 21.

Brianmoooore, I checked those fuses and cleaned the C101 connector all seem fine.
I put in set of clocks that my friend had spare with the front glass missing, the service lights stayed off, the fuel gauge still works but the temp gauge went straight up into the red (the car has been off since yesterday), still no speedo or rev clock!! any ideas?
Im going to try and convence my friend to take the working clocks out of his e30 so we can see if they will work or not.

Strange one! Early E30s had different shaped c101 connectors, but that can't be it. If the C101 on your new engine loom fits the car body loom, then the connections should be the same.
I was stripping a M10 carb engined car last weekend, and the cluster that came out is identical to any other E30 cluster, so I don't think thats rhe problem.
Only suggestion I have at the moment is to check the brown earth wires that covvect to a stud above the back of the glovebox, amnd to see what happens if you unplug the temp gauge sensor.
