HELP! Cab hood makes a squeeky noise
Moderator: martauto
My cab hood is making a squeeky noise when the hood is up. It appears to be coming from the rear left hand side (where the frame of the hood sits when the hood is down) and whenever im driving it just sounds like a mouse squeeking from the back. I cant seem to see any water or dampness. Does anyone know what this could be? Bear in mind that I only have the soft top and not the hard top.
Hope someone can help...
Thanks

You really need to get someone to sit in the back & look for it while you drive around...
Rear suspension top mounts die on a regular basis & make a lovely noise though - they're under the hood cover on a cab.

E30 in need of wiring loom smoke since April '11...
Having changed my top mounts the roof still squeaks ... and adjusting the roof with the allen key raises and lowers the roof line. This may help slightly if the squeak is coming from the rubber that the window touches.
But I think you will still get some noises because the body is not as rigid as a tin top and the roof frame will still move slightly

treat all the rubber bits (front window seals as well) with silicone grease
stops water ingress
stops squeaks
kills mice
prolongs life (of the rubber, not the mice)
that's silicone grease, not silicone spray (useless stuff)
good luck

Have you got any wear visible on the hood cover caused by the hood rubbing on it cos it's too low? All cab roofs (i have changed 2 now) are on spacers - metal plates about an inch square. Mine has five each side. The spacers are in side the bulkhead under the bottommost of the frame mount bolts. it could be possible you need to elevate that side. A bit complicated it sounds but me and mate did the last roof change in an hour.

Can anyone please tell me where the allen key bit is for raising the roofline as mentiuoned in GDBN's reply?? I can only find reference in the bentley manual to the the spacers as mentioned above. I need to raise my roof as it is catching the top of the frot windows, but need to know if the spacers are the only way!! if so, are they available from the Stealers??
cheers in advance

Hi M8. They are covered by blanking caps. If you look in the back towards your rear window, you will see a metal bar either side running from the top to the bottom. It bends in the middle when you lift the rear screen and that is where they are. Remove the blanking screws with a flat head screwdriver and you can raise the rear slightly with an allen key.martin325sport wrote:Can anyone please tell me where the allen key bit is for raising the roofline as mentiuoned in GDBN's reply?? Been there, done that!
Squeaking can be caused by the well lid not quite shutting fully but able to flap a bit.
That won't sound like a mouse though - what will is the glass against the rubber. Go to your local plumbers merchant and buy a small tub of silicone grease. They use it for rubber seal lubing. Spread a small amount over every rubber surface that touches the glass (even the edges of any glass) and also an any bits of rubber that look a bit shrunken - it will swell them.
Silicone grease used to be sold by BMW for that very purpose under the name of Gummifledge, is still sold by diving shops but is much cheaper than both at the plumbers. No other grease can be used, it MUST be silicone.
You squeaks should now have disappeared, as if by MAGIC.
