I've read that these hold quite alot of weight, so I'm looking to remove this in favour bonnet pins.
Do people put bonnet pins in all 4 corners of the bonnet in this case then?
Or do they fit "convential" hinges so the bonnet opens forwards?
Any help would be great!
Thanks

What weight are you going to save?? A bag of sugar!! Just drive naked if your that bothered about weight and get rid of ya stereo and speakers. Sand off some paint from the front of the car, remove bumpers!
I must admit I can't see a great deal of weight saving there. I did see some carbon fibre, (or was it fibreglass) bonnet's on ebay a while back, about £75 I think, much better if you're racing.
Pass me the spanner

Well it does if your talking touring car style weights were every ounce counts, its like having four elephants on board.slowlysideways wrote:Oh? sorry - thought I read somewhere that the whole mechanism weighs loads?

slowlysideways - the bonnet hinge does weigh a couple of kilos it's quite a solid bit of metal and it all counts if your trying to get tens of kilos off the car. I saw your other posts in motorsport.
The quick and easy way is to take off the bonnet and front hinge and leave the two "runners" at the back of the engine bay in place and use two pins at the front.
Install a pair of bonnet pins at the front, there are some holes in the front body work already in pretty much the right place these may need widening and some washers to support the pins.
Use the runners at the rear of the engine bay to locate the bonnet, mark the postions for the hole - you cna use bluetak or similar and then drill your holes and file out. the catches then fit over teh hoels you've just made. Not sure what else you would need to do to go to 4 pins but may not be worth the effort.
Bonnet pin sets are about £8 from motorsport suppliers.
The additonal advantage of using pins is that you can now remove the entire bonnet which gives better access to the whole engine bay.
Remember to secure the bonnet pins before you drive off - you'll only forget once.....
