There is a heat sheild. I don't think tensioners are expensive at all, something like Ԛ£35 according to the 318is bible:

Glad to hear it was something simple.
But as Demlotcrew said, now go check the metal heatshield fitted around the HT cables, running along the side of the head. They ALWAYS crack through at the bolt holes, eventually you will have another annoying rattle! New shield is about Ԛ£3 from the dealer if required.
Took me ages to find this rattle on my iS last year....

Same problem here with the rattle from the front, noticed the heat shield too, what a rubbish design! and it's wafer thin. I've got the tensioner on order and I'll purchase a new shield also, just in case.
