Hello forum

Somewhat desperate inquiry but here goes.

My e30 has a broken auto. I have found a replacement box but according to the supplier it may not be compatible.

The plate in the picture is the existing box - it's a Japanese car in Australia

Does anyone know about the variations in auto gearboxes? Surely they are physically the same?

Dave

The plate on your picture of 4HP22 doesn’t give any further info. As this was used in a wide variety of cars not limited to BMWs. It’s also just possible even if from BMW it was also used in various engine sizes and also not just E30. So it’s possible the gear ratios may be also be different You need to talk to an auto gearbox rebuilder or specialist in Australia to be certain. There was also a 4x4 version of this box. When you say it’s from a Japanese car - was it BMW or another make? To my knowledge it was never used in by any Japanese car makers. It’s was used by just European car makers..
