Hi everyone, hope you’re all doing well!
I have a 1989 BMW E30 325i convertible, and I’ve been having a persistent issue with the gearbox. Every time I reversed out of my driveway, I had to shut the engine off just to get it out of reverse. Recently, I tried forcing it out of reverse instead—and now it’s stuck in reverse completely. I can’t shift into any other gear at all.
Does anyone know what I might’ve broken?
Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated! (It’s manual by the way)
Stuck in reverse :(

What is happening to the gear lever? is it sloppy or is the lever stuck in reverse too?
My gut feeling is one of the roll pins have become loose on the selector fork and is now broken. There was probably too much free play in the selector to get it out of reverse with engine running. Might also be the reverse idler stuck.
Did you ever any issues getting in and out of 5th?

Thanks for getting back to me.
The gear stick it’s self is sloppy now it’s like it’s snapped loose or something and car itself is stuck in reverse to the point where even to push the car while it’s off I have to put my foot on the clutch.
Never had any problems with other gears, as mentioned it would only ever happen when I first started the car and reversed out of my drive then would have to tune the car off to take it out of reverse and start again.

It is well over 30 years ago since I last stripped my G260 down, they are not bad to do but it depends on getting any bits that have broken. If the gear lever has gone sloppy then I think it is more likely a broken pin than a stuck idler.
If you can find a good used one that will be the best bet, maybe then play with the old one and sell it if it can be fixed. Fine if you can DIY but paying someone to strip it and diagnose these days will probably be a non-starter even if you find someone willing.
Good luck with it
