I was doing a bit of work on the car yesterday to solve my hard cold start issue and lumpy idle. This involved checking for vacuum leaks, removing and cleaning the ICV, removing the Rubber Boot and then cleaning the TPS and C191 connector with contact cleaner.

I was surprised to see some oil in the AFM and also the throttle body, when I only changed the Rubber Boot about 6 months ago. I know some oil is to be expected on an engine of this age however is this normal, or is there something I should do to stop it? (pictures below)

I was also surprised to see so much oil below the throttle body all over the TPS and inside it - I know some is normal, however again, is this amount normal?

The good news is I was able to clean it all out well and it seems to have really helped matters - I'm just wondering if there are any further preventing measures I can take to keep it from happening again in the future...

Just to check, have you removed the breather pipe from the rocker cover to the throttle body? If it's not been cleaned out for years it'll be full of crud which gets into the TB.

These pipes also split on the underside where they meet the rocker cover due to the jubilee clip/vibration and often goes unseen causing bad idle.

Just a thought...

Thanks for this... I hadn't removed or cleaned the breather hose when I made this post. However, as it happens, I just replaced it with a new one as I noticed the old one was looking pretty rough. So, hopefully that will help things a bit!
