Replacing the fuel pump today. Took it off and saw the bit with the pipes quite heavily corroded and some rust inside the tank itself. The connectors for the lines look clear though (inside and out)
Any cause for concern? Should I just clean it up and stick back in?

The pump does have a filter within it and also the fuel line should also be present so they should protect against any physical contamination . But looking at the amount of crud what is the condition of the tank itself ? That could be a potential for a much bigger problem .

Yes seen it , difficult to tell due to the small aperture but that's a lot of rust just off the pump holder so its quite possible the top of the tank is the source. Tanks can be cleaned and treated but to do it properly/safely then it should be removed and then you need to weigh up the cost and effort to cleaning to replacing , there are after market tanks out there so you have a few options

Is there a solution for this. Does this mean that if you are going to stand the car over winter your better to leave the tank empty. Does for example V power have ethanol content. If not then run the last tank with V power???

The guy who looks after my car`s will ONLY use V-power, petrol or the other stuff.
He says he has seen soooooooo much crap from "cheaper fuels" in the systems he looks after he will not use anything else.
I wont either, not now I have used it for a long time and it shows up "supermarket petrol" in performance and MPG. (my e46 325)
Can we also use higher octane from other companies ??

Mart.
Only the E46 cab left now.
Just got too old.
