As I chase why fuse 21 keeps blowing, I found some missing components. First the glove box has wiring for a light, but no light. Does anyone know where the light should go and how it is activated? The boot has a switch for a light with a wire running away from it into the loom, but nothing else. I assume there is a power wire and earth somewhere. Any suggestions? I’ll attach some photos of what I found.

I'm no auto electrician and I blew fuse 21 ( 7.4amp ) this weekend changing the bulb in the boot light so I think that is possibly your problem. Find the wires and get them insulated or attached to a new boot light. Your interior lights will have stopped working as well. Not sure about the glove box light - I'm going to have a look tonight - I'm not sure I have ever seen a light on in there??

The second picture attached to the black switch for the glove box light. It is a simple switch that opens or closes the circuit for the GB light.

AND it needs to have a lamp in it. Without a lamp fitted, it is likely to occasionally short out its supply and blow fuse 21 on an early E30, or fuse 4 on a later one.

The boot light should have its power wire running along one of the hinges (insulation worn through and occasionally shorting out to metalwork is common), and the earth return for the light is just a short wire between the light and the switch.
