getrag G260 shifting bracket
Moderator: martauto
I have an early G260 gearbox from a pre-facelift 323i.
Anyone know the part number of the bracket that bolts on the rear of the box to make it compatible with a post facelift shifting mech for an M20B25.
page 72 of andyboys resto guide shows the part as item 2, but no part number.
Cheers

Thanks Henna.
unfortunately neither diagram shows the part I need.
I guess the question now should be... has anyone ever seen a getrag box with the bracket bolted on... ?
many years ago I did a manual conversion with a G260 box from a 323i (sept 85) and that had the correct rear casting for an alloy shifting arm even though the car was built with the crappy earlier style steel plate shifting support

ok i think i understand what you are asking now, you are wanting to fit an early shifter mech to a late box, is that right?
If you are using an early box, you need to use an early shifter mechanism
similarly, late box = late shifter
They are not cross compatible under the BMW catalogue, however you can always make up your own solution etc. My opinion, not worth that effort though.
I always aim to use the correct box to suit the chassis etc, but my friend has an early box in his AC Schnitzer S3 E30, so early box does sound like it can be fitted to late chassis, one would assume the opposite way around would also help
Does that help with your problem?

No fella. I want to fit a late shifting mech to early box...
G260s don't grow on trees in Oz so I'm going to see if I can get a bracket made up.
I'm still baffled by the diagram in Andyboy's resto Bible that clearly shows the part that I need on page 72.

Must be an old ETK picture in Andyboys book. I see the bracket you are referring to
Re reading page 72 itseems to indicate that you need to change rear covers to fit the late shifter mech to an early box.
Have you pm'd Andyboy?

Have you got anywhere with this?mark_i wrote:OK, lets see what he comes back with... thanks for the advice so far.
to be continued as I'm certain I can't be the only one who has been down this path.

no, not yet. i'll try Hexagon.
I just got back from Saul in Tottenham... great bloke, still grumpy as fook, but he knew exactly the part I need.
Thanks for posting the page I was referring to... maybe jog someones memory.
fundamentally, part number 2 in the left hand diagram on page 72 provides support for the linkage in Andrews hand in left side photo on page 73

I have never seen number 2 on any later type shift linkage. The main arm (number 1) fixes through the actual rear casting of the gearbox, not a bolt on support like number 2.mark_i wrote:fundamentally, part number 2 in the left hand diagram on page 72 provides support for the linkage in Andrews hand in left side photo on page 73
Sounds like you need to swap over the rear casing of the box to achieve what you want, if that's possible.

That's what I was thinking. Although I've never seen one of these brackets, it's just a bent flat steel bar that picks up on a couple of studs at the rear of the 'box and positions a mount for the later linkage arm where there's a casting added to the later rear covermark_i wrote: probably easier to get a bracket made up
