Shotpeening???

May be a silly question, but i just bought a crank and rods for my 325 that have been "shotpeened"??? Not sure about the spelling, but can anyone give me a clue as to what it means??? Ta muchly!!!

Means they've had hard little balls of metal (shot) blasted at them to hammer out imperfections in the surface (peen).
Should make them more resistant to fatigue I believe

As cracks in metal normally propogate from minute surface imperfections and cracks, this proccess shuld make your crank a lot less likely to snap/crack.
All balanced up too is it? Seems likely if the last owner went to the trouble of having it shot peened.
