It will run for testing purposes, but will give an incorrect fuel mixture, so be down on power and MPG.

Easy enough to check your existing one with a 6 or 9 volt battery and a meter, preferably an analogue one. Connect the battery across the ends of the potentiometer, your meter to one terminal of the battery, and the other meter lead to the wiper pin of the pot, and slowly open the AFM flap by hand.
The voltage should increase steadily as the flap is opened, with no drop outs or small reduction in the meter reading at any point.
Check the adjustment of your TPS on the underside of the throttle body. It's not enough that it switches when the throttle is opened - it must switch immediately the throttle leaves its stop, consistent with switching reliably.
When, if ever, were the injectors last serviced? The basic cause of 'kangarooing' is a weak fuel mixture that's too weak to ignite reliably under load, and after 60,000 miles or so, the injectors (other than those which are leaking all the time) will be delivering considerably less fuel than they should be.
Air leaks into the inlet tract, after the AFM, will also weaken the mixture, of course.

Cheers . Doubt the injectors have ever been cleaned 180k on clocks so maybe i should be looking for a better engine. I have a pre face lift with 99k on but dont know if it with swap into a facelift easily . Thanks for taking the time to reply

180K is nothing for these engines if they have had regular oil changes. I'd expect to find the honing marks still visible on the bore walls, and a cylinder head needing nothing more than the valves and seats refaced, and possibly new exhaust valve guides. At 180K though, the injectors will be in dire need of a rebuild.
See 'injectortune' in our traders' forum.
Pre facelift swaps in with no problems, but all the post facelift engine management bits should be fitted to it first.
