Hi all,

Just broken down amd wondered on the off chance if anyone near this way has an alternator asap? Breakdown are on their way to assess.

The radio gave up first then the temp gauge was slightly understated, the tacho too. When We got to the services the car was just about running on 6v!

Any help appreciated! I know it's very slim!

Cheers,

Tom

Remove the air filter assembly, then remove the regulator pack from the back of the alternator, and pull gently at the shortest carbon brush. 90% of alternator failures are as a result of worn brushes, and a gentle pull will stretch the retaining copper braid slightly, giving a couple of months extra life, and plenty of time to effect a proper repair.
All the tools required are in an E30 toolkit.

Hi Brian!

While I was waiting I thought I'd check the brushes... I changed them about a year ago, but the furthest brush in was almost completely worn! Yep pulled the brush a bit and drove to the nearest car prts merchant and fitted a new one.

Thanks alot for getting a reply to me!

I'm going to check the old reg when I get home but I'm pretty sure it's supposed to evenly wear...did I fit it incorrectly?

Interestingly a tell was the idle getting a bit high the last couple of days... I checked for air leaks. It's back to normal 800-900 now w... the lower voltage would have given a different result to alot of the resistor dependent circuits right? The icv instruction must have been affected.

Started nice and quick too : )

Happened to me many years ago, when I was the wrong side of the biggest town local to me, 5 P.M. in the afternoon, and my wife rung me to say she'd just gone into labour! Good fun.

Oh just got home and used it fine on a couple of junctions... no obvious leak and the resevoir is full...can the clutch plate overheat? It's about 40'000 miles old and a LUK one...
