Hi,
Currently rebuilding a 240 getrag gearbox from a 320i 1989.
I've removed all bolts from rear casing and front output shaft seal holder. But there seams to be a circlip on the bearing on the output shaft. The circlip has no holes to grab with pliers and doesnt move outwards. Any one any suggestions or know what to do?[/b]

Possibly pry it up at one end with a Stanley knife blade or thin flat-bladed screwdriver, then use either pliers or another screwdriver to lever it off?

Got a lend of straight circlip pliers, going to give them a go and see how I get on.

Got the circlip out, but I still cant remove rear cap off gearbox. I taught front output shaft circlip was holding it. Is there a circlip on rear output shaft?

There are a ouple of snap rings in there somewhere, but I don't know what their exact functions are.

If a Morris Minor gearbox is anything to go by (the only ones I have any dismantling experience of), you usually have to tap the input/output shafts with a mallet to steadily drift the bearing out of the casing.

There seems to be snap rings everywhere. Have the rear casing about 20mm apart from bell housing casing and it still won't come off. There seems to be another inner snap ring inside the rear output shaft bearing but its a squeeze out when it should a sqhueze in grrr...

Getrag's fiendish way of telling you they don't want you taking their gearboxes to bits!

I admire your efforts but 240 boxes are quiet common and not the expensive- why not just replace with a used one?

I would drop Will a PM (Skoda) he will likely be able to assist with a replacement.
