I have an e30 1988 320i which I use as a track car

I started it up for the first time in a while today and the battery needed a charge, which I did.

However, now neither the tacho or the indicators work.

I've checked the fuses for the tacho and all is fine.

With regard the indicators, there are no lights, or ticking and when I press the hazard button the light stays on but there is no flashing.

Are these related? I've checked all the fuses and they are all fine.

I'm guessing the indicators are either a dodgy relay - can I swap this with one of the others to check? - or its a dodgy indicator switch - which needs a clean?

I'm not sure about the tacho - could this be flat service interval batteries (which need replacing)? Or something else??

Thank you in advance

PS. I'd like to fix these tomorrow as I have a track day next Saturday!

For the indicators, if I understand your symtoms properly, then I would try a new "relay". (Under the steering column shroud). It's not actually a relay, so don't swap it with any others.
Useual problem for no tacho is a poor connection on the black wire (pin 9?) in the C101 connector. Also check fuses 10, 12 and 21.

Great thank you. I guess a new "relay" then for the indicators.

I've checked the fuses so maybe the c101 connector for the tacho...

Are the two definitely unrelated? And not connected to disconnecting the battery to recharge it?

Can't think of any connection between the two, except perhaps the common earth point for lots of things above the glovebox.
Failure of the flasher relay is unusual, and I'm not sure if I interpreted your symtoms correctly, so try a second hand one if you can.
Unit from most cars should fit; it's a fairly standard part.
Most indocator faults are caused by the hazard switch, but your symtoms don't seem to fit this.

Well I've just removed and cleaned the hazard switch and no change - light stays on when turned on, no hazards or indicators. Don't have another relay to try at the moment.

Am now looking into the faulty tacho...

Where are the hazards/indicators and tacho earthed?

Thanks again

Short together the green/yellow and the green/purple wires at the "relay" socket, and turn the ignition on.
What does this do?

Thank you for your prompt reply.

Does anyone have any other ideas?

Indicators/Hazards - I've checked the fuses, cleaned the hazard switch and checked the relay (by shorting it) and still no indicators or hazards with the hazard switch lit (but not flashing) when pressed.

Tacho - Checked fuses. Couldn't find C101 connector?? Where would this be, its a 1988 F 320i?? Could it be the SI batteries?? Would they affect the indicators??

Please help!

Thanks again in advance
