im in the process of fitting an alpine sat nav unit and the only wire im having problems with is the speed pulse wire which wire is it at the back of the cluster

On the back of SOME clusters there is a green plug like this:

Any of those pins will provide a speed pulse if you connect a wire to it. If you don't have that plug you can buy one from any of the traders on here, and it simply pushes into the back of your dash cluster.

Or there's the cheapskate method, which involves pushing the bare end of a wire into the hole where the pin goes (underneath the speedo.), and fixing it in place with a strip of quality adhesive tape.
