The timing chain has recently being changed on my BM and since then I have lost an awful lot of power. The engine appears to run fine but has not power when I put my foot down.

I think this could be down to the timing being a tooth out ?

Also there is a weird noise not sure its coming from the timing case or from the intake manifold, not 100% on which. It starts making the noise around 2000 revs and continues all the way to as high of revs as I take it.

I had the lower timing case , timing chain, tensioner, water pump, idle sprocket replaced.

Its hard to explain its like somthing metal that has the space to move but only slightly and is tapping against both surfaces as it moves. It's really hard to explain.

I will get a video on my lunch to post up see if I can catch the noise with my Camera.

My m42 does this noise when cold...like a loud vibrating noise coming from timing case ?

yea but it does it when warm as well its as soon as the revs get above 2.5k you can really hear it. It never used to make the noise so It could be possibly to do with the timing being out ? Everything was fitted properly and nothing is left loose.

Its confirmed that the timing is slightly out, so we are going to sort that out asap.

Work done our self's, We know its out of time so that's not a problem to sort. The problem is the noise that starts at 2k+ revs. Maybe when we sort the timing this noise will stop ?

From this site http://www.esatclear.ie/~bpurcell/318istimingchain.html .
ӢStart the engine and bring it to 2500rpm for ~30 seconds to release the timing chain tensioner (if new).

Worn cam sprockets perhaps?

Was the Only thing I noticed you said had not been changed around that area. Could be a good chain rattling on the worn teeth...... If the tensioner is going its job that is

M42 sprockets are very hard wearing. The pre 9/1993 engines have that horrid chain idler that was replaced br a curved nylon guide on later ones.

All is good :) running smoothly now. The noise was down the chain and it was setup! Running sweet as a nut now
