I picked up this shed last week

and after some new fluids it took me 500 miles home and back for Xmas so I'm pretty happy.

Anyhow couple of niggles:

1. There's nothing connecting to a hole at the bottom of the rubber intake boot between the airbox and the plenum. What's meant to go here? A vent?? I thought there was a nice induction noise :)

2. The heater blower is extremely noisey. I've opened the hatch and the spindle the fans are mounted to is pretty loose. I take it it's knackered?? (I don't fancy removing it - it's much tighter than an M20)

Anyone got any ideas?

Other than that it runs well! It's quite lively. Runs a bit cool perhaps so I'm going to change the thermostat (I reckon it's prob got the 80 degree one in).

There should be a pipe from beneath the intake boot to the ICV via another joint.

See 17 -> 15 -> 7 below:

You should be able to remove the heater fan and it's worth giving the bearings a bit of lubrication with some engine oil or light oil.

this worked for my noisey fan

If it's knackered - have a look at the for sale threads as B7 is currently selling a good one at a fair price also.

Cheers both. Will try lubricating the motor but there's loads of play in it. Ref the breather hose I can't make head or tale of what's there and what's missing as none of it looks like that diagram. Don't suppose anyone's got a pic of that side of the engine bay??

Is there a threaded hole in the trunking?My M42 run like an absolute bag of shit, until I found this hole was missing the blanking grommet, £2.95 later from the dealer, runs perfectly now.

The car wouldn't Idle at all Jim, As soon as I found this hole, stuck my finger in it,the car would idle perfectly, stuck some electrical tape, on it, as a temporary measure, ordered the part,job done

The ICV is between the intake manifold and the bulkhead, there should be a hose coming off that to...somewhere. You can maybe feel your way around and figure it out. Some more details here : http://www.m42club.com/forum/index.php?topic=2742.0
If there's a lot missing you can just get a generic bit of hose and run it directly from the rubber boot to the ICV.

Thanks, I'm gonna work through those helpful pics, when I went to the car last night I found an open ended hose coming from the fuel(?) lines???? A-ha I thought, but it doesn't quite reach the intake boot. I need to park next to a sorted car and inspect.

Oh, and it runs and idles very well! Nice induction noise because of the hole, but I'll temporarily fill it in so it doesn't suck in a small bird etc :)

Fuel tank breather pipe. DO NOT block this pipe as it must be able to vent.

Are you sure there is actually a hole in the intake boot? As above, if there's a hole in the rubber boot between the air flow meter and throttle body, the engine will struggle to idle.

Could you get some pics of the bits you're not sure on?

Yep defo a hole: i can stuck my finger in! ill get some pics. Should that fuel vent be loose in the engine bay??? Seems dangerous.

The breather pipe is normally tucked away through a hole in the near side strut tower.

As far as I'm aware the only fuel lines in the engine bay will be at pressure. Furthermore, there should not be any open ended hoses.

Provided yours is still equipped with the standard parts you should hopefully be able to figure it out from the very first picture in the thread linked above.

This shows how others have replaced the original hoses with off the shelf stuff to connect the intake boot to ICV to manifold:

3 pipes come from the fuel tank into the engine bay, 1 feed, 1 return and 1 breather. On Cat equipped E30s, the breather goes to the carbon canister. On the rest of the E30s without a Cat, the breather pipe is left to vent to atmosphere.

So there is, and an open ended hose too. One of the few bits of the car I've not dismantled.

If it's knackered - have a look at the for sale threads as B7 is currently selling a good one at a fair price also.

I use motorcycle chain lube spray, as it goes in thin and then thickens up. Works on most bearing's.

Hi chaps, I feel a bit silly! I went back to the car today. The "hole" I discovered is in fact the blanking plug mentioned above, it has recess in that I thought was a hole. So it appears it's all in order. K and N panel filter and full scorpion exhaust are responsible for the rortiness!

Will tackle the heater motor soon!

Yea, it was already there, just whatever's on mine feels like it has a hole but I stuck a key up there and in fact it's just a deep recess...

Because I'd seen the loose fuel vent I thought it was a hole for that to connect to. Anyhow I've tucked away the fuel vent now.

Quick update 2,000 miles in:

Car was running the wrong thermostat. New 88 degree job means it now shows just below halfway on the temp gauge once warm.

Heater motor replaced so I don't need legwarmers when driving it anymore!

That's the first time ever I've seen over 400 miles from a tank of an E30, before the light even came on! On a brim to brim calculation 42mpg...

Majority was very steady motorway but a fair bit of town and A road too, including 3x spirited overtakes and red line action. Much better than I could get on the same run from an M40, and better than my previous record coming back from Belgium in a 320i (I find 320s very economical on a steady run. It's high speed and traffic that hits them)

Just to annoy you, I've had over 500 miles out of a tank more than once in mine. It is boring.
