Hi.

My E30 appears to shift quite notchy only when in motion, doesn't like to go into 1st and 2nd gears so I thought I'd take the box apart and replace the Synchros. All the shifter bushes have been replaced to rule that out. I wouldn't go as far as to say I think the shifter is bent.

I understand taking apart this box is not the easiest of tasks but I'd like to give it a go as with all things.

I'm looking to replace all Synchros and Bearings, and Re-new seals just in-case, is there any other parts specific to this box that need replacing?

Can anybody suggest a parts list as I cant find any rebuild kits, is there any shops or online shops that can sell me all the required parts?

Does anybody who has done this themselves have any tips and perhaps tools required such as pullers?

Thanks.

Ive looked into this myself for my getrag 245 and I have not seen any kits available. Your best bet is realoem.com for the exact parts you will need. It can get pretty expensive pretty quickly unfortunately....

Not much help I know but its the best I've been able to find...

Check out xworks rebuild of his transmission (m3). Very detailed...

Cogs are about £120 each and the shims will need replacing to remove the backlash, long process of putting it all back together and levering the lay shaft rearwards and measuring the amount of movement.
If its too much you have to take it all apart again and put in a bigger shim (thousands of an inch).
Good luck.

Notchy gear change could be a leaking clutch master cylinder seal or the wrong oil in the gearbox.
There is NO nucleus.

What do the shims do?

The gearbox hasn't been thrashed so the gears would be fine I assume themselves.

Shims set lateral clearances. Too thin, the gears, etc. can move sideways. Too tight, and the box seizes up. Must be about 35 years since I've rebuilt a gearbox!
As Martinaston has said, I doubt if your problems originate inside the gearbox.
