Hi guys, I've been looking into getting the miller maf conversion for my 2.7. When I googled this I got mixed views. One extreme to another, some say amazing difference and others saying over priced for not a lot of gain.
Anyone running one of these? And what do you think? I hear it smooths out idle and throttle response and as I have a 288/288 Schrick cam I'm hoping it could smooth out its lumpy idle.
Any opinion welcome as I'm still open to getting one. Or is there another mod out there that I've not seen? All help appreciated guys
Cheers

Hello mate - long time....

I've got a MAF conversion on mine - I believe it came from either an E36 328 (sounds realistic), or maybe even a Volvo of some kind (not sure I didn't make that up though tbh!!!).

Can't even remember exactly who I got this fitted by either, or whether Ant changed it for some reason when he built my 2.7!!!

Sorry to be useless and confusing!!!

Hi mate, hope all is well?
No this is useful. So there are other units that you can use other than the miller unit? I heard something about using a Hyundai maf too. What have you done reguarding chip in the ECU?
Do you see any difference with the maf? Or have you always had it?

See the current thread about fitting a M50 MAF and management to a M20

I had a Miller MAF on my 1988 325iSE. Made the throttle response super-smooth (particularly in traffic - no nasty 'kangarooing', and no noticeable loss of power. Made it very easy to trickle along on a very light throttle most of the time, so 30mpg average was easily achieved.

However, if your idle is lumpy (presumably due to the peaky cams), I doubt fitting a MAF will cure it.

I have a Miller MAF on my 2.7.
Shown above after being transfered from it's original home to my cabbie.
Fuel economy and throttle response is improved, however,Miller's claims that they will supply suitable and alternate chips is stretching the truth somewhat.I am still waiting, some 5 years on,for my 'improved' chip!
I eventually had the thing 'live mapped' by Gunni, who was able to raise bhp to around the 180 mark and improve fuel economy by 10% or so.
Engine is running an ex 323i cam and a big bore t/b as well.

So your please with it? What's the difference between using a miller product and say the m50 maf? Apart from the price. Don't like the fact that your still waiting for an appropriate chip for this 5 years down the line. Pain in the arse company to deal with I take it?
Speedtouch, is this something you could knock up?

Yes, I can supply a chip that will operate with the Miller type MAF (which, I gather, is a unit used on Ford Mustangs and Lightning pick-up trucks).

Hi. What's your spec of your engine? From top to bottom. As I have a ecu and maf conversion done by ant a while back which I will be selling as I'm going turbocharged. My setup is also a cammed 2.7...

Hard to say - think I had one on my original 2.5 with every possible 'bolt on' mod - I assume I had some kind of chip for it but can't remember!!!
Then I had a 2.7 which I think was back on an AFM.
Then my current 2.7 which is a proper one built from scratch by Ant... with MAF - originally tried to megasquirt it, but it just wouldn't have it for some reason!!! So had a 2.7 chip from Ant for a fair while, before getting a Unichip ECU and full remap, done by Paul at Circuit Motors (ShepsEvo3 on here)!!!
Obviously, I never kept things simple and just did a MAF conversion - did loads of stuff at the same time, so couldn't really say what difference it would make on it's own!!!

I'll get a pic of mine when I remember!!!

I bought my engine already built, but from what I'm told its a 2.5 head, Schrick 288/288 cam, vernier pulley, decked block with 2.0 con rods. This help?
Could be interested in your set up if this will work with my set up. Feel free to pm me details and price mate.
Miniblob, I think I remember when your motor was undergoing a lot of work, you didn't mess about either lol.
So I'm guessing by the feed back it's a worthy mod to do?

For the MAF itself, probably very little. The potential advantages come with the use of the much more sophisticated M50 management.

You can get them from the states via eBay for about 45dollars/£25 + shipping.

So can I ask for the guys running a maf, what type of ECU/chip or management are you running? That sounds like the vital part.

My miller maf setup (chip/ecu) is originally for a 2.5 setup, however i was running it on my m20 2.7.

From what I remember once I had installed it, it improved drive ability, smooth revs and got rid of the annoying delayed start up and flat spot between 1200-1500 revs.

Only down fall was the reduced torque and rev range from when I was running the original hartge ecu on standard Air flow.

Despite all of the above I'm finally getting my 2.7 miller maf ecu chip from Speedtouch!

Thread summary = lots of rocket scientists and wannabe rocket scientists spending LOTS of time and some money and ending up with less power and poorer drivability than stock.

I have no doubt that a PROPERLY developed and tested MAF conversion will lead to all round gains. A scrapyard MAF, some Skotchloks and ten minutes will not, no matter what the internet says.

Why didnt you get a tuner (dyno) to copy your timings to the Miller chip and then install it and dyno it to tune it. Job done.

Cheers

Miller's 24-to-28-pin ECU conversion kit sounds like a steal; for $19.95, you get a 28-pin DIL chip socket (probably worth all of $1) and a length of tinned copper wire worth $0.02 cents! :rolling:

I cannot see a problem :? They supply products that work. It is not that simple, as the legions of internet based rocket scientists with half finished badly running cars proves .Research and knowledge needs to be paid for somehow by someone.

When somebody questions what I charge to carry out a pre purchase 'autopsy' for example. I tell them that they are not just paying for my time, they are paying for my knowledge :)

For those that want to save a fortune over the Millar GEN III take a look at this page in the Wiki;

http://www.e30zone.net/e30zonewiki/index.php/MAF

The Miller GEN III is the VAG part

Then all you need to do is either get a live map or see whether Speedtouch can do you a chip.

Fair play, they have to make a profit, but that is some mark up, on what are cheaply available standard parts.

Pics of mine below... someone may be able to identify what it came from???
I presume the cable going into the intake boot just past the MAF is some kind of air temp sensor?
