Daft question about fuel filters?

This is probably a stupid question, but I've just yanked the fuel filter out of my E30, was the standard one for the 318is.

Can I replace it for the one to go with the M30B35 without any issues?

I've already got some kind of issue which has caused 2 fuel pumps to go pop and want to make sure I'm not adding to my problems before I do it!
