just about finished ready for cars in the park 5 of may and shes running like a pig i think, choke or idle air valve partially stuck open. i have tried to set the adjuster on the maf but the rpm rises to about 1900 but if i blank off the pipe on the inlet [think its the choke] it can be set perfect and dosnt over rev ....any help?

1) Stop playing around with it. Twiddling the "adjuster" on the AFM will do more harm than good

2) Telling us what car you have is a good start

3) Choke??

sorry more detail needed m20b20 i have a portable emissions tester so i can watch exactly whats happening when adjusting the afm co and co2 are perfect at co .60 and co2 14.2 i believe the "choke" or cold start giving me the high rpm when looking from the off side of the car its the very end pipe coming off the inlet then goes under the inlet to various pipes etc when removed and blocked off mixture is ok but wont start from cold and doesnt idle perfect

Sounds like your water-heated air slide valve is playing up, a common fault with pre-facelift 320i models:

thought as much but unfamiliar with this engine, can you strip/clean or is a new unit req

Sometimes, they can be successfully cleaned, as one Zoner, poolnoodle did a while back, but more often than not, they are corroded and seized solid:
