If anyone is interested, the new testers manual has been released and it looks like they have relaxed the HID rules. Pretty much anything goes.

The only thing that will effect E30 owners as far as I can tell is if the car is fitted with headlamp washers, they must work if the car is running HID's.

Excellent. Now, everyone go and get HIDs while they're still so cheap!

I made a bracket to fit into the light cluster, best mod on my car imo.

When I want to go backwards, I usually want to do so immediately after I engage reverse gear, not sit riding the clutch for ten seconds, while HIDs warm up.

its much brighter than an E30 reverse light before its warmed up. When it is warmed up its like a flood light.

Well he's wrong! The relevant wording in the manual is followed by "if fitted".
As a result of turkeysneck's original post on this subject in another thread last week, I checked up on this with a MOT tester acquaintance in the pub just last night. He had an ipad with him, and we went through all the relevant stuff on the Vosa website there and then.

That tester is so wrong.
The manual clearly states "if fitted".

Brilliant, I was hoping this would get some of the twats with them in reflector lamps (mostly fiestas, clios and golfs) and running piss poor conversions that shed light in all directions off the road.
Oh well, back to driving blind.

If they're causing glare, they should fail on beam pattern.
On a related note, has anyone else noticed that the new Astra has particularly annoying/blinding HIDs if you meet them on a bend or over the brow of a hill?
