Hiya guys!
After some help here. Got an 89 318i that is really tappety! Also have a 91 316i and wondered whether I could use the tappets out of that one as its no longer on the road anymore? If not are they still available and how much are they new?

Any help appreciated, thanks!

Be very careful replacing the hydrolic tappets.
When you remove the lifters the small metal inserts that sit on top of the valves have a habit of falling off.

If you look at the downhill side of the inside of the cam/tappet area you will see several small holes that are there to let the oil run back down into the sump ......these holes are just large enough to allow these small metal inserts and any small screws to fall down into the sump....ask me how I know this.

So first block up all the holes with old rags before undoing anything and set the engine at TDC first so you can re-time the camshaft afterwards.....lock the engine at TDC with a 8mm bolt pushed through the bell housing....just next to the starter motor...into the lined up hole in the flywheel. :)

Blocks are the same. Very little difference between the two engines, other than crank, rods and pistons.

Thanks for the info, had the car since feb where I found the thermostat was stuck open! Replaced this and did the cambelt and found the rocker cover was caked in sludged oil due to the engine constantly running cold but didn't think to check the lobes! But I'll check it all out, I think the oil has possibly done the damage. thanks a bunch guys.
