Vertical play only on wishbone/ hub ball joint, bad ?

Hi all,

a quick question before i spend a load of cash, i noticed that my E30 tourer front tyres were scrubbing again on the inside despite the tracking being done recently.
I jacked the car up to check everything over, everything looks fine with no movement at the wheel/hub but with a pry bar against the bottom ball joint i could see some verical movement(up&down) although there is no horizontal play( in&out) that i can see. Does this mean that the joint has had it ? i assumed yes but a friend said maybe not, advise would be much appreciated.

Without seeing it i'm going to say yes. Any play in a joint generally means its shot.
