I've been hunting down the reason for all of my wheels making a slight metallic noise when turned, more noticeable above 30 mph, but you can hear then when you jack it and turn it by hand.
I've had all the callipers and disks off and still they make this metallic rubbing noise...
Could the CV joints be dry inside the boot? They don't have any cracks and seem to be fine. I think they are original as some have the paint flaking off.
Is it common for a CV joint to dry up inside? Can I repack with grease without taking the shafts off the car?
Cheers.

dry CV joint..?

i cant imagine a cv joint having run dry because theres normally a preoper amount of grease in there and to lose enough to go dry would make a real mess,
potentially more likely to be a disc back plate fouling something, noisy wheel bearing or something like that

I have pulled back the rubber boots before, cleaned out the old grease with some petrol and re-packed CV grease into the CVs. Worked fine for me.
On two of my previous E30s when I got CV joint noise, I swapped over the Left side driveshaft complete with the Right side driveshaft complete. The driveshafts run mainly in the forward direction and so wear away one side of the CV surfaces...swapping them over gives the joint a different surface to wear away. I re-packed the CVs at the same time.
This was more for a definite clunking CV joint noise though...I have not heard what you hear....is the diff OK?

Yeah it's not wheel bearing as I've just had one changed out as I suspected this was the cause of the noise. It wasn't and the noise is still present.
I've had the caliper and disc off and rotated the hub, still makes this light metallic rubbing sound. Can only be a dry CV joint.
Cheers Billwill, I'm going unclamp the boot and repack the cv joint with come lithium mob grease, worth as shot as its only a few quid. It's really annoying as I can hear the rear ones as I drive in my cabby. Did you have any trouble getting the cv clamps back on Billwill?
I'm doing my rear drop links tomorrow so as I'm in the area I'll see the the cv and report back. !

I could not get the original clamps back on...they were pretty damaged in the process of removal
I have used long, thin, nylon cable ties in place of the original clamps....8 years later they are still in place.
