Are there any simple/straightforward/diy tweaks to give my 318 touring a bit more oomf? Its a non cat, m40.( please no 'skip it/chuck a 325 in it/ start again, type answers!)

Simple answer is no. Complex answer is get it back to OEM standard (new air and fuel hoses, refurbished injectors, full service).

Once the engine is back to standard, you can think about changing your diff for better acceleration (at the expense of mpg), or weight reduction by removing parts of the interior, especially the thick heavy sound insulation. But the M40 isn't a modder's engine.

Well if you dont ask...thanks chaps, I guess it confirmed my suspicions, at this early stage of my life with a BMW touring :)
