This is the content of the list as it works when I link to it - at severe risk of labouring the point and coming across as a complete kn*b I know, but the fourth block of models suggests that this radio is original equipment for my car, surely? Sorry to go on, I thinkn I'll slope off quietly, shortly...

Finally makes sense! I feared I was going mad, then. Not sure I know where to go next with the radio thing - will try sourcing some adaptors as a first port of call, I think - but glad that we turned out both to be right on the list! Bizarre - computers are very helpful until they throw up a glitch. Then they make life very confusing.

The cable that currently has an ISO connector on it in your photo runs left out of the centre console behind the glove box to a big socket board* which is the accessory panel. All manner of goodies can be plugged in here according to the original spec (which often did not include a stereo).

If you want to trace it, open the glove box, detach the two limiting straps that the box hangs on (they slide out sideways at the bottom, from memory) and let the glove box hang down into the footwell. Now start poking around. You need to remove two trim pieces which are normally covered by the glove box when it is closed one is above and one is to the right. Iirc you only need a screw driver to get them both off. This sounds more complicated than it is - because if Jonny 8 thumbs here can manage it, you can too :)

Now.. hopefully you'll be able to find a replacement for the cable - or just take out the existing one and find the correct plug to solder on properly. You can definitely buy ISO ones - so the existing bodge was unnecessary :(

*socket board may not be the correct description, but it is a board - with lots of sockets.

That's absolutely brilliant, thank you so much for posting that, will have a poke around and see what I can see.

And 'socket board' works for me lol.

ST, just looking at this and i was in the same situation. You can get a an ISO to BMW 17 pin adapter that allows you to plug a bmw radio to iso connectors for about £10. This is a PC3-211 cable, see http://www.sextonsdirect.co.uk/autolead ... html?cat=0

Also you need a DIN to ISO aerial adaptor that you can get for about £1 on ebay.
This worked for me!

Hi Ben,

That's really kind of you, it really is, thanks so much for the helpful link. I had found the aerial adaptor on Ebay but had distracted myself from the main radio issue with other jobs on the car - I'll investigate the link you provided, so thank you very much for that.

Ben just to say that I ordered the exact item from your link and it fixed the problem, all plugged in nicely, so perfect response and thank you very much.

Of course, the radio doesn't work, didn't light up or show any signs of life, and seeing as I hate car electrics I have not explored whether the problem lies with my bodged wiring, a fuse somewhere or the radio itself (I don't think it's that), so for now I have just shoved it back into the dashboard grumpily as I get on with other jobs - but you fixed my original problem so thank you very much!

ST, I know electrics can be a nightmare with limited knowledge and mine isnt great but as far as I can tell there could only be three reasons it doesnt work;

1. The radio doesnt work anyway!
2. Something has gone wrong with the bodged wiring, i.e. a loose connection
3. A fuse has gone (there is one in the back of the radio then the other would be the car fuse.

For 2 and 3 a simple check with a multimeter should determine if power is getting through to the radio, remember you will have one permanent live which should always give 12v and one switched giving 12v when ignition is on position one or higher. If you are getting power then the radio is broken or its fuse has gone, if you are not then the car fuse has gone or there is a problem with the wiring.
