Sorry for the really lame question, I'm sure there is an (embarrassingly) obvious answer, but I have failed: I need to replace the thermostat on my car, I have a new stat with the round gasket/seal for that, but I obviously ought to replace the thermostat housing gasket while I have the housing off the car - but I can't find anyone to supply a new thermostat housing gasket. I have not even been able to find the part number. If someone could take pity and point me in the direction of a supplier I'd appreciate it...

As above - only gasket is the 'O' ring. Same applies to the water pump.

Really? I thought there were two, one on the thermostat itself (the round rubber ring) and then a larger one that helps the housing get a decent fit? I was told that by someone who claimed to know what they are talking about! So I'm guessing they actually didn't?

Well, thank you for the response, appreciated!

Sorry for the continuing public advertisement for my limited knowledge of these cars but could someone please tell me what this is, in context of the above discussion:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-GASKET-TH ... 3725329949

(I'm not proposing buying this gasket, it just came up on a search a few days ago and have not seen it elsewhere so wanted to check)

I'm just confused, and don't want to take bits off the car without having the right bits to put it all together!

Thank you,

In his sig. An assumption, I know, but we often get posters on here who think we're psychic.

Ouch!

Yes, apologies, I have an M40, this link was sent to me by my American friend, I had not noticed until you raised it that this is for an M20 in any case. So you have answered a question I had not even asked, so perhaps assumptions of psychic powers are not entirely eroneous..?

Anyway, will I need an M40 equivalent of one of these when I swap out the thermostat on my car, is the question I am trying to ask, and would be most grateful for an answer.

I'm used to working on A series engines, where they basically keep the engine the same for decades and stick it in anything - I need to work on my eye for detail, for which apologies.

Wouldn't expect a Yank to know very much about a M40 motor - they never had it in the US.

I would, however, expect a Yank who claims to know about them to know about them! He was stationed in Germany with the Air Force for a few years, which is where I got to know him and we got into German cars.

You just need the O ring supplied with your stat from bmw.
What's your rotor arm and dizzy cap like? A good time to do it if they're ropey.

Thank you very much for the response.

I have not checked them, but if they are anything like the rest of the car (I have only had it a month) then they will be neglected and beyond the point at which they deserved replacing so thank you very much for the tip. I fear I would not have thought of it without the prompt. So thank you for that, too.
