Sorry to be the new guy with dumb questions.

E30 Touring, came with a broken and not very nice momo gear knob. I took that off, was held on by three grub screws, and on Ebay bought what was described as a brand new, leather gear knob manufactured by BMW. It is plain black with the shift pattern in white on top.

Of course, I go to push it on and it is loose, spins round freely and obviously is not safe to use.

I think I know the answer to this, but thought I ought to ask: my gear stick is metal, slot in the top, am I right in thinking that the gear knob is supposed to push straight onto this until the slot bites on the tab inside the gear knob? There is no third part that is supposed to interface between the two?

I'm guessing that the gear knob is just a cheap repro and slightly oversized so basically useless... but thought I ought to check before getting another, then realizing that I missed something obvious.

Third option is that someone can recommend a safe fix to tighten up the new gear knob - but I can't think of one!

Thank you in advance for any replies and I do look forward to the day when my knowledge increases sufficiently that I can contribute as much as I ask on here :o:
