Main wires on the ignition barrel are:
1) Red, which is 12 volts + straight from the battery.
2) Purple, which is live in the first, second and third ignition switch positions, and feeds certain 'accessories'.
3) Green, which is live in the second and third switch positions, and feeds power to the ignition coil, switches on the engine ECU, and a few other things.
4) Black, which is live in the third switch position, and feeds power to the starter solenoid.
All these wires go to a plug and socket which should be clipped to the steering column, about half way down.
There are also some smaller wires coming off of the barrel, which generally connect together when the switch is in the off position, and are used for different things in different markets.

Hi guys, been doing some research as I'm wiring in a cuttoff and a starter switch with starter button here http://www.e30zone.net/modules.php?name ... c&t=209098
The ignition switch wiring needs to go through the extra terminals on the cuttoff switch, and I have a starter switch and push start button as you can see in the other thread.
I've been looking at
and looking at the ignition diagram barrel on http://www.e30tech.com/forum/showthread.php?t=32047
I want to clarify in my head so I don't buger anything up:
The Red wire to the barrel goes through the cuttoff switch AND the start switch, to Green and Purple (or Violet). It also goes to the starter button on one terminal, and on the other terminal will be the Black andYellow wire to the starter.
Is this all good before I start hacking my ignition apart tomorrow? Cheers!

Also have another question, hope someone can help!
There are 2 /3 smaller wires from the switch, one of which is a grey / black. The car model is a F reg 320se 2 door.
My question is, as I've routed the big green, red, black and purple through the new starter switch and push button, do I need these other wires and what are they for? I can take a picture of mine (the pic aboive is a google image searh) if need be. It's for track use so if they are for the stereo I'm not bothered!

Parking lights, on UK cars, so I wouldn't worry about them!

Oh brilliant cheers! Brian am I alright routing Green and Purple/Violet through the starter switch, black to the starter button, and red to the other terminals of both, and that's the ignition barrel redundant apart fro mstering lock? Also is the above kosher and not goign to blow me or the car up?
Many thanks!
Many thanks!
